No good deed goes unpunished… Good Samaritan’s attempt to save ginger cat from California highway results in PILE-UP – but the adorable animal was rescued and taken to a shelter
- A kitten was seen dodging between lanes on the Coronado Bridge
- One person parked on the highway and got out to rescue the animal, causing a three-car crash
- The animal was taken to PAWS of Coronado, but it is unclear if it will be put up for adoption
A small orange kitten was seen darting through traffic on the Coronado Bridge, prompting someone to get out of their car and come to help, which then caused a multi-vehicle crash.
On the morning of September 26, a motorist stopped on the bridge in Coronado, California, in an attempt to save the ginger kitten, which darted between cars.
However, two other motorists did not see the stationary vehicle and drove into it.
A photo posted by Coronado police showed a black Toyota sedan with a dented rear bumper and a red car with a mangled hood. The drivers are said to have suffered minor injuries.
Coronado firefighters and Corporal Andrew Hutchens of the CPD discovered the kitten hiding in the movable “Zipper” lane divider.
The uninjured animal was taken to PAWS of Coronado for care.

The Pacific Animal Welfare Society, or PAWS for short, was founded in 2003 by Dorothy Shirey.
The passionate advocate created the Coronado-based animal rescue and established a lasting partnership between PAWS and the city government.
The shelter takes in hundreds of animals every year.
“Today, we continue to honor Louise’s legacy by providing quality medical care, treating the animals in our care with love and compassion, and working to find each animal a perfect forever home through our adoption services,” the website said.
Comments under the CPD’s Facebook post suggested naming the daring kitten Zipper.
It’s unclear where the animal came from in the first place, but one irate commenter had ideas, demanding: “Who would dump a cat on the bridge?”
There are currently two adult cats available for adoption at the shelter. A message promises that “kitten season is in full swing” and that some will soon be up for adoption.
