Nick Kyrgios reveals how his mateship with Novak Djokovic has reached new heights after a ‘rocky’ start: ‘We talk nearly every day’

  • Says that he and the Serbian star talk almost every day

Nick Kyrgios has opened up about his blossoming friendship with Novak Djokovic, explaining that the pair now “talk almost every day” and send each other memes.

Kyrgios had previously engaged in a lengthy battle with the Serbian star, calling the 10-time Australian Open champion a “tool” and claiming he had an “obsession” with being liked.

The Australian troublemaker had also branded Djokovic ‘stupid’ for organizing an infamous exhibition tournament in 2020 that ended with Djokovic and other high-profile players testing positive for COVID-19.

Their relationship appears to have taken a 180 degree turn in 2022 when Kyrgios became one of the few players to publicly defend the Serbian after he was controversially deported from Australia on the eve of the Australian Open.

The pair’s bromance intensified when they met in the Wimbledon final later that year, with the Australian admitting that Djokovic had messaged him before the match saying he ‘hoped to see him there’.

The pair were previously far from friendly, but that all changed two years ago

During his commentary role for Eurosport, Kyrgios revealed on Tuesday evening that he and Djokovic have become even closer.

“We had a rocky relationship in the beginning and a few things changed and now we literally talk almost every day,” he explained.

Kyrgios hopes Djokovic will face American Ben Shelton in the fourth round after a fiery showdown at the US Open last year.

“I’ve had such crazy matches, me and (Stefanos) Tsitsipas didn’t always get along, but we still respect each other’s game,” Kyrgios said.

‘Like Laura (Robson) said, it adds to the spice of the game and that’s what you watch.

“I saw them in the same section of the draw, I think the fourth round, so if they make it you better believe a lot of people will be in.”

Presenter Laura Robson further questioned the Aussie about his daily messages with the world number 1, and wanted to know what they sent each other.

“We just talk about everything, we just send memes to each other,” Kyrgios said.

Robson was shocked.

‘Real? Djokovic sends memes?’ she asked incredulously.
