Concern is growing for a New Mexico man after he disappeared with his dog after appearing to head to the Colorado River at the Grand Canyon on Sunday.

Thomas L. Robinson of Santa Fe has not been seen since he left his champagne-colored 2001 Toyota on Sunday at Lees Ferry, a spot often used for whitewater rafting, in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

The National Park Service believes Robinson, 58, may have attempted to sail down the massive river on a homemade wooden raft.

A photo of the device released by the agency shows three patterned wooden planks loosely cobbled together, as well as a paddle and a life jacket.

A missing persons investigation has been launched and those with information on the case are encouraged to contact the Grand Canyon Dispatch Center.

The NPS wrote this in a statement described Robinson as a 6-foot-1 white male with brown hair and hazel eyes. His dog is believed to be a white 11-year-old Welsh Corgi.

The sixth longest river in the US, the Colorado River stretches for 1,500 miles and its raging rapids make whitewater rafting a common activity.

It starts in the Rocky Mountains but widens within the 277-mile segment in Grand Canyon National Park, according to the park service.

Due to the speed of the current, the river’s water only takes a few days to flow from Glen Canyon to Lake Mead, CBS reported.

Last August, a man died while rafting down the Colorado River at the Grand Canyon.

The 38-year-old died after falling from his raft into the treacherous waters, CBS reported.
