Netflix’s The Gentlemen season 2 in doubt due to ‘challenges in getting the same actors back’
The gentlemen is one of Netflix’s biggest current hits, but while a second season of the gangster drama seems inevitable, there seem to be some pretty significant obstacles to overcome. The first is that director Guy Ritchie’s schedules are already pretty full, and the second is that the lead actors’ diaries are also pretty full.
The news comes through The sun newspaper, which quotes an unnamed “TV insider”: “It will be a challenge to get the same actors back together, but Netflix chiefs are keen on a sequel. Another obstacle will be securing Guy for the series, as he has already done this year there are several film projects in the pipeline.” As much as Netflix apparently wants a season two, getting everyone together at once could prove as difficult as assembling a heist team.
What do The Gentlemen stars say about season 2?
The gentlemen was always designed as a show that would work over multiple seasons. But that doesn’t mean anyone made any firm promises to the cast. Giancarlo Esposito recently mentioned it Digital spy that while he hoped there would be more seasons, a second season of the show was never formally discussed on set. “There was never any talk of a second season,” he said, but “we have the opportunity to move forward. And I think the show does.”
As for Theo James, who plays Eddie Horniman in season one, he certainly seems to see a future for his character β albeit not a particularly happy one. In conversation with Netflix Tudum, James explained that at the end of season one we see “the beginning of his journey into the heart of darkness.” After signing “a deal with the devil”, Eddie and Susie are “about to embark on a devilish journey”.
Miramax’s head of global television Marc Helwig is certainly enthusiastic. Speak with Deadline, he said a second season is definitely being discussed. βWe have started that process,β he said. βThere’s a number of writers we’ve talked to, certainly a lot of discussion with Guy about what he would like to do in a second season, what he should focus on.β
