One of the tightest finishes in Kentucky Derby history marked the 150th run of the race, with Mystik Dan barely ahead of his nose to win the first leg of the American Triple Crown.

Favorite Sierra Leone, betting on second place, rushed out late to try to deafen the crowd of more than 156,000 people who had gathered at Churchill Downs.

In third place was Forever Young, who sat on the outside between Sierra Leone and Mystik Dan, who ran on the rails.

This is trainer Kenny McPeek’s first victory in the Kentucky Derby and his second career Triple Crown victory after taking home the Preakness Stakes in 2020 with Swiss Skydiver. Earlier in the day, his filly Thorpedo Anna won the Kentucky Oaks.
