  • A university in Vermont has awarded an honorary degree to their campus celebrity: a cat named Max.

    Days before their commencement ceremony, Vermont State University’s Castleton campus announced that Max would receive an honorary degree for his kindness on campus.

    A message announcing the cat’s doctorate said: ‘Max the Cat has been an affectionate member of the Castleton family for many years.

    “While his adventures may have been delayed, Max exemplifies the #CastletonWay and we are honored to have him join VTSU’s #firstclass.

    “With a resounding purr of faculty approval, the Board of Trustees of the Vermont State Cat-leges has awarded Max Dow the prestigious title of Doctor of Litter-ature, complete with all the catnip perks, scratching post privileges and litter. the associated responsibilities.’

    Max lives with his owners in a house on Seminary Street that leads directly to the main entrance to campus.

    In an interview with the Associated pressMax’s owner Ashley Dow said he had been socializing on campus for the past four years.

    “He decided he was going to come to campus, and he just started hanging out with the students, and they love him,” Dow said.

    She said the students always enjoy seeing Max on campus.

    They take selfies with him, pet him as he purrs — and he even participates in campus tours with prospective students when they’re in the building across from the family’s home.

    “I don’t even know how he knows to go, but he does,” Dow said. “And then he’ll follow them on their tour.”

    Dow, who is commonly known among students and graduates as “Max’s mom,” is often asked about his well-being and when they will next see him on campus.

    Max will not participate in the actual 2024 commencement ceremony.

    The school will present his diploma to Dow.
