Mother scolded for illegal act in shopping center: ‘I had no idea’

A furious debate has reignited after a mother was berated for putting her two young children in one shopping cart.

The confused Sydney mother wondered if the act was “illegal” and claims she was criticized for it by a stranger at the supermarket.

She revealed that the combined weight of her two children was about 35 kilograms and shared an image on Facebook of the meeting in a Coles trolley with their legs dangling from the bars.

“I was told by a lady today and she told me it is illegal,” she wrote, Yahoo Previously reported.

“Is she right?” said the mother on Facebook.

The conversation has since erupted again on social media – and opinions remain divided.

Many parents quickly stood up for the mother and shamed others for the judgment.

“I would have told her to mind her own business!” said another.

A third added: ‘Is there a weight limit for groceries IN the cart? I doubt it!’

Others, however, were concerned about the potential risks of many discussing the weight restrictions on shopping carts.

‘Illegal? Sure, they’re probably over the weight limit, but who cares,” one person wrote.

“Probably not illegal, but not a wise idea either due to the potential risk of the trolley falling if the weight becomes unbalanced as the kids move,” wrote another.

“I don’t know if it’s illegal, but if their combined weight is significantly more than the stated limit, your trolley may not be balanced and could tip over if you go over a bump if they rock it,” added one person please.

A spokeswoman for Coles previously encouraged customers to be safe when using their trolleys.

“Most Coles stores have a selection of specialty trolleys available for the convenience of our customers,” she said.

These include baby capsule, twin and toddler trolleys and trolleys for people with reduced mobility.

“We encourage parents to ensure that their children fit safely in the seat and to use seat belts where available.”
