Super Size Me filmmaker Morgan Spurlock’s ex-wives – Sara Bernstein and Alex Jamieson – have paid tribute to him following his shocking death at the age of 53.
Spurlock died last Thursday, as confirmed by his family, from complications of cancer, which he had been battling privately.
He had finalized his divorce from Bernstein shortly before his death and three years after their filing in March 2021. The former couple married in 2016 and share eight-year-old son Kallen.
On Sunday, Bernstein thanked the crowd for their “love and support” and called Spurlock the “best dad ever.”
She included a sweet throwback photo of Spurlock holding then-baby Kallen while also cuddling with his and Jamieson’s son, Laken, now 17.

‘Thank you for all the love and support over the past few days. We really appreciate it,” Bernstein began. “As Kallen said to me, ‘Morgan was the best father ever and we will love and miss him forever.’
She then encouraged those who would like to “honor Morgan” to donate to Hope Lodge NYC – a non-profit organization that provides free housing to cancer patients.
“Much love to you all,” Bernstein concluded.
That same day, Spurlock’s ex-wife Alex Jamieson – to whom he was married from 2006 to 2011 – shared an emotional tribute on Instagram.
“Oh my… it is impossible to put into words what you meant to your family, to your boys, to your friends, to the film community… to me. I’m just so glad we were friends in the end,” she began.
‘Morgan was a generous, creative, dedicated person. He loved his friends and boys. When he started something, he first delved into his heart, with his body and soul.’
She continued, “Morgan loved to dance. And laugh. And tell stories. And encourage others too…Morgan showed up for people.
Jamieson then gave insight into their post-divorce relationship and how Spurlock has supported her over the years.
“He came to EVERY art show I curated, helped me think about projects, even after we both remarried. He was one of the FIRST to order my abortion trading cards.

“Even when we didn’t get along, we came together to celebrate and laugh at our wonderful boy and how he grew up to be kind, funny and creative.
‘I miss you very much, friend. I didn’t know it would hurt so much. Rest now,” the activist concluded.
Along with her thoughtful words, the mother-of-one shared an image montage featuring throwback photos of Spurlock with his son, celebrities, as well as photos of himself and Jamieson on the Super Size Me promo trail in the early 2000s.
Spurlock’s family announced his death in a statement on Friday.
They did not specify what type of cancer he was battling, or when he was diagnosed. He underwent chemotherapy before his death.
Spurlock won an Oscar nomination for his groundbreaking 2004 documentary Super Size Me. He ate McDonald’s for 30 days to test its effects on his body.
The outcome was shocking; he gained 24 pounds and his liver exploded.
The film earned $20 million worldwide and sparked a fresh food revolution in the fast food industry.

Spurlock was widely praised for his groundbreaking documentary that highlighted how unhealthy fast food is
Spurlock was skeptical about how much real change had actually been made when asked about the issue in 2019.
“There’s been a huge shift and people say to me, ‘Has the food become healthier now?’ And I say, ‘Well, the marketing certainly did that,'” he said.
“It was a sad day as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan,” Craig Spurlock, who worked with him on several projects, said in the statement.
“Morgan has given so much through his art, ideas and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man.
‘I am so proud that I had the opportunity to work with him.’
Spurlock also directed the 2013 One Direction documentary/concert film One Direction: This Is Us.
The West Virginia native has produced nearly 70 documentaries through his production company Warrior Poet.
The sequel to Super Size Me, ‘Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!’ was removed from the 2017 Sundance Film Festival after Spurlock admitted to sexual misconduct.
Spurlock said he was accused of rape while in college, settled a sexual harassment case with a female assistant in his office and was unfaithful to all of his wives and girlfriends.

His physical and mental health deteriorated rapidly and by the end of the experiment he had gained 24.5 pounds
“For me, there was a moment of realization – as someone who tells the truth and someone who has made it a point to try to do the right thing – of realizing that I could do better in my own life. We have to be able to admit when we were wrong,” he told the AP.
Spurlock immediately resigned from Warrior Poets, the production company he co-founded.

Spurlock was a gonzo filmmaker who focused on the bizarre and ridiculous. His stylistic touches include punchy graphics and fun music, blending a Michael Moore-esque camera-in-your-face style with his own sense of humor and pathos.
Since he exposed the fast food and chicken industries, there has been an explosion in restaurants emphasizing freshness, artisanal methods, farm-to-table goodness and ethically sourced ingredients. But nutritionally speaking, not much has changed.

The filmmaker is survived by two sons, his parents and former spouses Alexandra Jamieson and Sara Bernstein.
