Nikki Haley is collecting a lot of donations from people who also gave money to President Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign.
It comes as Republicans and MAGA stans claim Democrats are backing Haley in an effort to scuttle former President Donald Trump, despite his huge lead and three primary victories so far.
There are just three days left until the Republican presidential primary in South Carolina, and the latest Suffolk University/USA Today poll shows that 63 percent of voters plan to vote for Trump, compared to the 35 percent who prefer Haley.
Many have called for Haley to resign, claiming her waiver bid is over.
But Haley gave a speech on the race on Tuesday, saying she is “nowhere near” dropping out and is in the 2024 race for the long haul. She has repeatedly said she will remain in the race at least until Super Tuesday on March 5. race will continue.
Nikki Haley’s presidential bid taps donors who also gave money to President Joe Biden during his 2020 presidential campaign
The Federal Election Commission documents were released Tuesday analyzed by Politico reveal that more than 5,2000 donors who gave to Biden’s 2020 campaign also gave to Haley’s 2024 campaign.
Those who gave to both presidential candidates included the 1,600 donors who gave more than $500,000 to Haley’s efforts in January.
This only fuels speculation from Trump die-hards that Haley is backed by the Democratic establishment and being used to damage the former president’s chances in the general election.
The number of donors who have given to Biden and now Haley in 2020 is notable as the former United Nations ambassador is running in a primary to face the president.
It’s also generally rare for donors to give money to two different parties in a political race — meaning it’s likely that these donors abandoned Biden to give their financial support to Haley.
Despite the block of money coming from former Biden backers, Haley’s fundraising base is still largely Republican.
At least 5,200 people who donated to Biden’s 2020 campaign also gave money to Haley
Haley’s campaign reported raising money from more than 55,000 “big dollar” donors in the month of January, and 123,000 total over the course of her entire campaign. These donors give a total of at least $200 to a candidate.
In January, Haley’s campaign raised a total of $11.5 million and spent $13.1 million, according to the FEC report filed this week.
Some wonder if the campaign has the money on hand to continue the race.
Haley’s speech on Tuesday suggests they have enough money to last a few more weeks, when 15 different states will vote in their primaries in what is known as Super Tuesday.
