A doctor-in-training who also worked as a model died after taking an immune stimulant made from human placenta, police in Russia say.

An investigation is underway into the tragic death of 22-year-old Anna Kolyada, a fifth-year medical student, who self-administered the Japanese drug through an IV.

She died in hospital after developing a fever on her way to the airport to fly to Dubai.

Kolyada – who called herself an online “health coach” – suffered from fluid buildup in the lungs, septic shock, heart failure and blood poisoning.

She died ten days after being hospitalized, reports say.

A male friend to whom she administered the treatment, businessman Dmitry Zhulin, 33, fell ill and was also hospitalized but is now recovering.

A criminal case has been opened over Kolyada’s death, the Russian Commission of Inquiry said.

According to reports, she bought the Japanese Laennec treatment without a prescription from an online pharmacy and put on an IV for herself and Zhulin without contacting a qualified doctor.

It is suspected that the drug has been in a saline solution for several days and that an ‘infection has developed in it due to coagulated protein’.

The couple had wanted to strengthen their immune systems, it was reported.

Dmitry Zhulin, 33, a founder of online store SberMarket, fell seriously ill after using a Japanese human placenta-based immune stimulant

They had previously taken the drug without any problems.

Zhulin is a founder of a large Russian online store called Sbermarket.

Kolyada studied at the prestigious Sechenov Medical University in Moscow.

Researchers would examine the ampoules containing the human placenta-based immune stimulant.

Laennec is described by a supplier as a ‘unique immune stimulant’. It is obtained from placenta hydrolyzate….

“For the production of Laennec, the placenta is used that was taken from Japanese women after a safe delivery without complications.”
