Mobile phone detection cameras have become commonplace in Australia to prevent people from driving with their device, but many people don’t even know what to look out for.
The NSW Government was the first jurisdiction in the world to roll out mobile detection cameras in early 2020.
Since then the cameras have been permanently added in NSW and Queensland and are being tested for use in Victoria, the ACT and South Australia.
Hady Saleh posted a video on TikTok explaining what the different types of cell phone cameras look like around the country.
Mr. Saleh said his friends didn’t know what they were or what to look out for, so he felt he should inform everyone.

“Every time one of my buddies drives past here, they don’t know what it is,” said Mr. Saleh, pointing to one of the big yellow cameras.
“I tell them, brother, put your phone away, it’s a phone camera.
“If you’re driving on a highway and see these black boxes, that’s a phone camera, too.”
The black boxes he was referring to were used on high-speed highways and sat atop street signs.
They were rectangular black boxes with cameras on either side.
In NSW, the fine for using your phone while driving is a fine of $362 and five demerits, while in Queensland it is a more severe fine of $1,078 and four demerits

The other type of camera found across Australia is large and yellow, but despite this, they are often difficult to spot as they almost resemble a road works trailer or are mounted in gantries.
The yellow camera is a trailer-mounted camera that can be moved to any hot spot and was introduced shortly after its black counterpart.
The video has been viewed by more than 250,000 people and online users thanked Mr. Saleh for the information.
