Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron is getting a nice 4K Blu-ray release

If you missed Hayao Miyazaki’s latest* film, The boy and the heronIn theaters, GKIDS brings the enigmatic animated masterpiece to Blu-ray and DVD on July 9.

The boy and the heron will be packaged in three editions, one in 4K and Blu-ray, one in Blu-ray and DVD, and a limited edition Steelbook set that includes 4K and Blu-ray. All versions “will feature the film in the original Japanese language with English subtitles, as well as the new English language version,” according to a press release from GKIDS.

All three physical sets will be available on July 9, a few weeks after the release of a VOD version on June 25. Warner Bros. and GKIDS have also confirmed this. The boy and the heron will eventually be available to stream on Max.

However, Max likely won’t stream the special features from these GKIDS sets, which, according to the press release, include “full-length storyboards,” the music video for the film’s theme song, and interviews with composer Joe Hisaishi and Ghibli co-founder Toshio. Suzuki, and an interview and cartoon with accompanying animator Takeshi Honda.

All three physical sets are available for pre-order now.
