Michael Oher reportedly had the power to terminate his controversial conservatorship with the Tuohy family at any time after the age of 25, according to a report by the New York Post.
The former NFL star recently petitioned his native Tennessee to end the conservatorship initiated by the wealthy Tuohy family in 2004 when he was a heavily recruited 18-year-old left tackle. At the time, the engagement was publicly portrayed as an adoption, and it later became the focus of a popular book and movie, The Blind Side.
Now Oher claims the conservatorship allowed Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy to profit from his story while denying him film rights. But according to the Post’s report, he could have left the conservatory twelve years ago.
“It is still his wish that the petitioners be recognized as his legal guardians at least until he reaches the age of 25 or until he is terminated before then by order of this court,” the nine-page document read. The Post has obtained.
“He needs their help and guidance and continues to depend on them… Now that he has reached the age of 18, he is trying for all intents and purposes to have them appointed as his conservators.”
