Melanie Lynskey reveals it was ‘heartbreaking’ to lose touch Kate Winslet

Melanie Lynskey was just a teenager when she made her feature film debut in director Peter Jackson’s 1994 thriller Heavenly Creatures, where she bonded with her co-star, Kate Winslet.

Both 45-year-old Lynskey and 47-year-old Winslet received critical acclaim for their performances as two teenage girls whose intense friendship leads to their parents divorcing them…which led to the girls retaliating, though Winslet and Lynskey’s careers took different paths.

While Lynskey played roles in films such as Ever After and Detroit Rock City, Winslet starred three years after Heavenly Creatures in Sense and Sensibility, Hamlet and the global blockbuster Titanic.

Lynskey promoted the new season of Showtime’s Yellowjackets, which debuted in late March, on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, when she opened up about losing contact with Winslet.

Although she revealed that nothing happened between them to end the friendship, it was still “heartbreaking.”

“Losing contact with Kate was more heartbreaking than some breakups I’ve had,” Lynskey revealed.

“It was so painful and it wasn’t like anything happened, it’s just that she became a huge, international movie star and she didn’t have much time and then, all of a sudden, she’d be in Los Angeles and she wouldn’t have time.” ,” she added.

She said they lost touch, “happened gradually,” adding, “It happens in relationships.” People kind of drift apart, but that hurt me so much.’

Lynskey said it happened in another movie she did where she thought she was close with an unspecified actor… only to learn otherwise.

“I did this movie with this actor and when we finished I said, ‘Oh my god I’m just so glad I met you and we have this friendship,’ and she said, ‘Yeah I’m not friends with actors. I don’t stay friends with actors,” Lynskey said.

And I just thought, ‘What? “I was so shocked by it,” Lynskey said, acknowledging that the other person was:someone who had worked longer than me.’

The other actress endorsed the idea: “We’re moving on and this is only a few months of our lives.”

‘I was so sensitive. I was always so hurt by losing these great loves that I had,” Lynskey said, adding, “It got easier.”

As for Winslet, she said the last time she saw her was at the premiere of her 2009 film Away We Go, which was directed by Winslet’s then-husband, Sam Mendes.

Despite losing touch, Lynskey said Winslet was a “huge inspiration” to her after watching her deal with body shaming when she was younger.

“I know she’s a very, very confident person, but everyone is sensitive and she’s very sensitive,” Lynskey said.

She added, “And the way she was dissected and talked about… I remember being so furious on her behalf at the time.”

“Especially since Kate Winslet is in the world now. Kate Winslet does movies. And you will witness that talent and those performances… this is an actor who comes along once in a generation. Just concentrate on that!’ continued the actress.

“It made me so furious and I was just always amazed at how gracefully she handled that. It was always very impressive,” said Lynskey.

Lynskey will next be seen in the TV series The Tattooist of Auschwitz, based on the true story of Lale Sokolov, a Jewish prisoner responsible for tattooing the ID numbers on the arms of prisoners at Auschwitz.

Winslet recently reunited with her Titanic director James Cameron with Avatar: The Way of Water.
