One of McDonald’s most beloved menu staples is about to get a makeover.
Sundaes will soon be served in fiber-based cups as part of the fast food chain’s bold move to phase out all single-use plastic from its restaurants across Australia by 2025.
The clear plastic cups of hot chocolate, strawberry and caramel sundaes that are currently coming in will be phased out in August.
McDonald’s has started warning sundae aficionados about the change through online advertisements that have appeared on social media.

“Did you know that since 2018 we’ve been working to make all customer packaging from renewable or reclaimed materials,” the ad reads.
“We are committed to continuing to reduce the amount of plastic in our business and to have a positive impact on the communities and people we serve.”
The new sundae packaging is expected to remove 178 tons of plastic per year from circulation.
The new containers are made of at least 81 percent fiber-based materials, but still contain a small amount of plastic to “ensure food safety and quality,” a McDonald’s spokeswoman said.
McDonald’s recently redesigned its McFlurry cups to remove the plastic lids and completely replaced its salad bowls and sundae cups with fiber-based alternatives.
The fast food chain has also phased out plastic cutlery and straws in recent years following a national government plastics summit in 2020.
