Mauricio Pochettino insisted Chelsea should 'blame ourselves' as he lamented his side's missed chances in the 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Sunday.

Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty scored for the hosts in the Christmas Eve match, before Christopher Nkunku pulled a goal back for Chelsea on his Premier League debut at Molineux.

Chelsea are being made to pay for missing several chances to score and Pochettino says his side 'deserve a lot more' but can only blame themselves for the loss.

'We have made mistakes. We have to blame ourselves. That's why we didn't win. We had the chances to score,” Pochettino said. 'We are our own enemy. Today we lost the match.

'We feel very disappointed because I think we deserve a lot more. This competition will injure you if you are not clinical enough. We created opportunities. That's why it's so disappointing. After a few turns we gave in and that was very difficult.'

According to Opta, Chelsea have missed most of the big chances in the Premier League this season.

The Blues have created 57 big chances this season but have failed to convert 36 of them.

Pochettino highlighted that the youth of his current side was a factor in Chelsea's inability to be clinical in the final third.

'We talked a lot at the start of the season. We are young in age. It's a young team,” Pochettino said.

'We have players who are playing in the competition for the first time. They have to adapt. It's about trust and quality.

'If we want to win the games, we have to score. We are very disappointed. Sometimes we have to keep a clean sheet when we can't score. We conceded too many corners. We have to keep going and keep pushing. Young teams learn from these types of competitions.'

The most notable miss of the defeat to Wolves came from Raheem Sterling, whose first-half effort was saved by Jose Sa after he opted to shoot despite having the opportunity to square the unmarked Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson to make.
