A Maryland family who ordered a chest of props for their spooky Halloween themed party felt their own horror when they discovered that the dead person belonged to them and that there was still ashes in their rental chest.
Baltimore resident Brooke Wozniak had ordered the box through Facebook Marketplace, but was shocked to learn that the box wasn’t exactly empty.
Inside the white steel coffin was a photograph of the deceased, a death certificate, the person’s Social Security number, a George Washington University Hospital hospital bracelet, and a white long envelope that, according to the Wozniak, contained the person’s ashes, Fox5 DC reported.
All items were taped to the inside of the coffin’s liner, the news channel reported.
“Everyone was in shock,” Wozniak revealed.
After the initial shock wore off, Wozniak felt compelled to find the deceased’s family and made a TikTok video in hopes the right person would see it.
“We need to find out who the next of kin are or who knows her,” she said.
After the video went viral, the dead woman’s granddaughter saw it and showed it to her mother, Sabrina Jones.
It was Jones who confirmed that the items in the rental box were indeed her mother, Edith Crews Meriedy, a community pastor, who died of COVID in January.

As grateful as Sabrina Jones was, she also expressed the sadness she felt as she relived the loss of her mother. “It doesn’t ease the pain that she’s gone, you know? She was my best friend. I loved my mother dearly,’ Jones said. ‘I’m the only girl. I’m the one who took her to George Washington University and left her there.”

At the time, relatives were not allowed to see their sick loved one because of COVID.
Shortly after the discovery, Jones met the Wozniak family to retrieve the precious items.
As grateful as Jones was for the precious keepsakes, she also expressed the sadness she felt at reliving the loss of her mother.

After the ordeal, Jones met Glenda Freeman, owner of Freeman Funeral Services in Clinton. The funeral home was where Jones had rented her mother’s coffin and the place that took care of her mother’s cremation.
Jones told Fox5 DC that Freeman was very apologetic and took ownership of the accident, particularly the discovery of the sensitive documents. She also told her at the time that a number of crates had been transferred to a scrap yard for destruction.
During the bizarre incident, the Wozniaks also made a second discovery, when they found information from another deceased person who was also left in the coffin.
Jones, concerned about the case, was told by the undertaker that she was investigating and needed until Thursday to resolve it.
