Marvel and Star Wars confirm Disney Plus shows for 2024, and it’s bad news for Andor fans
Disney has announced its lineup of Marvel and Star Wars shows set to release in 2024 – and those waiting for Andor Season 2 will be disappointed.
In a press release detailing which series will arrive on Disney Plus next year, the entertainment giant revealed two Star Wars and three Marvel projects that will debut on the streaming giant. Unfortunately, regarding the first Andor season 2 is not one of the trio that will be released in the next twelve months.
Disney indeed revealed Star Wars: The Acolytethe first live-action production set during the High Republic era of the iconic science fiction franchise, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew – a series that draws inspiration from the beloved '80s film The Goonies – are the only Lucasfilm-developed shows set to release in 2024. So Star Wars fans shouldn't expect to see the second and final part of Andor do the same.
That is also a great shame. In our review of Star Wars: Andor we called it a “blood-curdling spy thriller that might be the best Star Wars show yet.” After a slow start (from a viewer perspective) upon its August 2022 release, Andor Season 1 ultimately became a hit for Disney Plus, with fans old and new suggesting it was one of the best Disney Plus shows ever.
Considering its popularity and critical acclaim, viewers have been waiting for it with bated breath Andor's second season is coming. Since the next part of the show has been in development for a while, some fans were hoping it would debut in 2024. However, thanks to the 2023 writers' and actors' strikes, production of the series starring Diego Luna has been postponed, meaning we'll likely have to wait until 2025 for the show to return.
Mimics, magic and mutants are coming to Disney Plus
As mentioned, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will also expand further next year with three TV series. We already knew Marvel Echo will debut on the platform – plus sister streamer Hulu – on January 10, 2024, giving fans of the world's biggest superhero franchise something new to stream after New Year's Day.
However, now we know which shows will be participating in 2024. Agatha: Darkhold Journals – the Kathryn Hahn starrer WandaVision spin-off formerly known as Agatha: Coven of Chaos – will also be released sometime next year, with one Agatha star suggests it will arrive in late 2024. The couple will be joined by X Men 97another Marvel Phase 5 TV show that acts as a direct sequel to beloved '90s shows X-Men: The Animated Series.
Official launch dates have yet to be revealed (Echo aside) for any of these series, and it will be a while before we get word on when they will debut on one of the world's top streaming services.
That's not a complete surprise either; Disney has faced numerous issues over the past twelve months, including numerous release schedule changes during the Hollywood strikes. In addition to the above shows, Deadpool 3 will be the only MCU film to hit theaters in 2024. However, Disney will release a number of non-Marvel films into theaters next year, including Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes And Alien: Romulus.
On the TV front, there will be new entries in some top shows from Disney Plus and Hulu, as well as highly anticipated new series to enjoy. The bear season 3 and Exceptional season 2 is among the first, while Shogun, Renegade NelAnd The artistic dodger (UK and Ireland) are three of the latter.
