Margot Robbie breaks her silence on Barbie’s shock Oscars snubs – as she says director Greta Gerwig ‘should be nominated’

Margot Robbie has addressed controversial criticism of Barbie director Greta Gerwig’s Oscars, days after the filmmaker failed to receive a nomination in the directing category.

Both Robbie and Gerwig were shockingly snubbed for individual Oscar nominations, despite the film receiving numerous other critical acclaim, including Best Supporting Actor for the actor who played Barbie’s sidekick Ken, Ryan Gosling.

Speaking at a Q&A hosted by the Academy Museum on Tuesday, Robbie said Greta ‘should’ have been nominated.

“Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is something you only do once in a career, and what she accomplished, that’s really it. But it has been an incredible year for all films,” she said.

Robbie emphasized that she was “beyond ecstatic” that the film had achieved eight Oscar nominations.

“We wanted to do something that would change the culture, impact the culture, just make some kind of impact. And that has already happened, and some love much more than we could ever have imagined. And that is truly the greatest reward that can come from all of this.

“I’m so, so obviously ecstatic. Anyone who gets the nods they have is incredible and the Best Picture nod.

“You can’t feel sad knowing you’re so blessed.”

Margot attended the Q&A and special screening of Barbie with Gosling, which marked her first public appearance since the censure.

The film museum was built by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which presents the annual Academy Awards.

Both Margot and Barbie’s director Greta Gerwig were snubbed by the Academy when they announced their 2024 Oscar nominations last week.

Despite the cozy, professional Margot looked cheerful as she answered questions alongside Ryan and their co-stars Rhea Perlman, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt and Kate McKinnon.

Margot, who also produced the film, performed the film in her Barbie T-shirt and hot pink heels, which she paired with jeans and a blazer.

While Margot and Greta were rejected by the Academy, Ryan was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken.

The actor blasted the Academy in a statement for overlooking his female colleagues, but failed to give up his nomination in protest.

And according to a source close to the Hollywood A-lister, he has no plans to do so. Speaking exclusively to DailyMail.com, the insider said: ‘Ryan stands by his statement.

“He understands that people are angry, because he is angry too, but he doesn’t let what anyone says online affect him.”

They continued, “Ryan is honored that he was nominated and that the film was nominated.

“If he wins or if he performs I’m Just Ken, he will honor Margot and Greta in some way.”

According to the source, Ryan is doing what’s right for his heart and has the support of his cast and director.

‘He doesn’t want to make more of it than it has become. He talked about it and people should take what he said seriously because he meant every word,” the insider said.

Ryan released a statement addressing Greta and Margot’s criticism shortly after the Oscar nominations were announced.

He began his statement by expressing gratitude for his nomination, saying, “I am deeply honored to have been nominated by my peers alongside such remarkable artists in a year with so many great films.”

“And I never thought I’d say this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it is for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.”

The actor then expressed his disappointment that Margot and Greta were not nominated, before praising them for their work on the film.

“Against all odds, with nothing but a few soulless, scantily clad and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, broke our hearts, pushed the culture and made history,” he added.
