Manchester United have confirmed the £60million double signing of Bayern Munich defending duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

The duo will join the club as the third and fourth signings of the summer transfer window, with Erik ten Hag’s side now around

Both deals are subject to the completion of their registrations. De Ligt has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2029, with an option to extend it for a further year.

Mazraoui will remain at the club until June 2028 and also has the option to extend his contract.

Both players will be reunited with Erik ten Hag, who worked under the Dutch manager at Ajax for a while.

Matthijs de Ligt, who joins for £38.5m (€45m) plus a further £4.27m, said of the transfer: ‘When I heard that Manchester United wanted me, I immediately felt excited about the opportunity for a new challenge at such a historic club.

‘In the conversations that followed, I was impressed by the vision that the football management set out and the role they saw for me in it.’

‘Erik ten Hag shaped my career in the beginning, so he knows how to get the best out of me and I can’t wait to work with him again,’ said the Dutch international.

‘I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level and I am determined to continue that record at this special club.’

Dan Ashworth, Man United’s sporting director, added: ‘Matthijs is an outstanding defender and a proven winner. He will add quality, experience and leadership to our existing group of experienced players.

“He has achieved a lot of success in his career and we are convinced that his best years are yet to come. We want to help him achieve them at Manchester United.”

Mazraoui meanwhile pays a fee of £12.8 million (€15 million), plus a possible £4.27 million (€5 million) in extras.

“It’s a great feeling to be a Manchester United player and I can’t wait to leave Old Trafford in the red shirt,” the Morocco international said of his transfer.

“I know I’m joining the club at an exciting time. Everyone I’ve spoken to has the same ambition: we want to win trophies together. I feel the determination to achieve that.

‘Erik ten Hag has played an important role in my development as a player, so it is exciting to see him again now that I am entering the best years of my career.

‘I know what he expects from his players and I will do everything I can to make the group successful.’

Before the announcement, De Ligt took to social media to say goodbye to Bayern Munich and the club’s fans.

The Dutch central defender left for Bayern Munich in July 2022 and said on Instagram that he found it ‘bittersweet’ to leave the club.

“Dear Bayern fans,” De Ligt wrote.

“I want to thank you all for all your love and support. I played two amazing years for this wonderful club. It was a true honour to play for a club like Bayern Munich. We lived unforgettable moments together. Winning the title and several great CL nights. These memories will stay with me forever.

“That’s why leaving this club feels doubly sweet. I will always remember the love and support I have received from the players, staff and fans. The recent petition signed by so many of you has touched me deeply.

“Thank you all for the two great years. I wish FC Bayern every success in winning many more titles, as Bayern has always done. Mia San Mia.”
