One man has died and police declared a critical incident on Tuesday after a crash in Sydney’s west that led to the closure of a major highway.

Motorists are being diverted due to the closure of the Great Western Highway in both directions at St Marys, between Glossop and Sydney streets.

A marked police car pulled up to a dark gray Holden Insignia sedan parked on Mamre Road near St Marys at around 4am.

The driver of the Holden is then said to have sped away towards the Great Western Highway and police followed him but lost sight of the car.

The Holden then hit a silver Toyota Corolla hatchback.

The male driver of the Toyota, who was not related to police activity, died at the scene.

The man has not yet been formally identified, but he is believed to be in his forties.
