A man was mauled to death by a lion at a zoo in India after climbing over a 7-metre-high fence to take a selfie with the beast.

The man, named locally as 38-year-old Prahlad Gujjar from Alwar in Rajasthan, entered a non-public area of ​​the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park in Andhra Pradesh, ignored a caretaker’s warning to step away from the lion and jumped into the fence. on Thursday.

Before the keeper had time to react, Dongalpur lion mauled the man to death.

Investigating authorities are currently conducting a post-mortem examination on the man’s body and are reportedly checking whether Gujjar was drunk when he jumped the 7-meter high fence.

Gujjar was alone at the zoo and police are trying to contact his family.

The zoo has three lions including Dongalpur; the others are named Kumar and Sundari.

Dongalpur has been moved to a cage and under observation since the deadly attack, which comes just days after a British woman in India drowned in front of her shocked son as they visited a famous seaside temple.

The 84-year-old woman and her son were visiting the city of Mamallapuram, in southeastern India, on Monday.

The couple went to a temple located on the shore of the city, and visited a beach next to it, and both decided to enter the sea of ​​the Bay of Bengal.

Authorities say a strong tide pulled the woman away from the beach.

Her son failed to save her, and an hour later her body washed ashore.

After police were informed about the incident, they sent her body to the Government Hospital in Chengalpattu, about 30 kilometers away.

Local media reported that police are preparing to fly her body back to Britain.
