Love Island fans praise show for its diversity as first contestants are announced

‘I haven’t seen such diversity since Britain’s Got Talent!’ Love Island fans praise the show for its ‘Asian representation’ after Ruchee Gurung is confirmed as the first female contestant

Love Island fans have been praising the returning show for its inclusiveness after the first two Islanders were confirmed on Monday.

So often criticized for a perceived lack of ethnic diversity, the ITV2 show was applauded on social media after London-based beautician Ruchee Gurung was revealed as a new contestant.

The 24-year-old was confirmed alongside partially deaf semi-pro footballer Tyrique Hyde, and their inclusion sparked a unanimously positive response from viewers of the hit show.

One impressed fan wrote on Twitter: “I haven’t seen such diversity in a show since Britain’s got talent.” [sic]

Elsewhere, a second viewer agreed, albeit with a wise warning, adding, “Great to finally see some diversity within the Love Island lineup. Ruffle looks incredible. I think she will be very sweet too.

Good job: Love Island fans have been praising the returning show for its inclusivity after the first two Islanders were confirmed on Monday

Hitting all the right notes: Criticized so often for a perceived lack of ethnic diversity, the ITV2 show was applauded on social media after announcing its first contestants

“I just hope she finds a nice guy to match her now, because we all know that on this show, the nice girls always get their hearts broken.”

Seemingly in line with the thoughts of many, a third wrote, “Finally someone from a different ethnicity.”

While a fourth quipped, “Asian???? Oh, maybe you all did a good casting.’

Another added, “QUEENIE, finally some Asian representation… FINALLY ASIAN REPRESENTATION… Omg she’s beautiful, we got some Asian representation here… Asian representation on the show.”

Evidently approving, a sixth wrote, “the Asian representative I’ve asked for.” [sic]

Popular: Ruchee from Suttin is already a hit with fans weeks before she enters the villa

Already in shape to be every inch the islander, Ruchee regularly shares sizzling snaps on Instagram and has updated her biography on the photo-sharing site to read, ‘I’m going to look for love in the @loveisland villa! ‘

Speaking of the show, she said, “I’m single and looking for love, and it’s the perfect opportunity for me to find someone… I’m a relationship type girl, but it hasn’t worked out so far. So I’m looking forward to finding the right person in the Villa.’

Tyrique, meanwhile, said about entering the villa that he was ready for love.

When asked how she would “pitch herself” to have someone date her, Ruchee said, “I really care, when I’m with someone I’m all for them…

‘I’m also very loyal and love to do nice things for the people that are special to me. My love language is gift-giving, so I’m a true giver when it comes to relationships.”

When the announcement was shared on Love Island’s official Instagram page, a large number of fans raved about the fact that there would be Asian representation in the show, which has been widely criticized for its lack of diversity in the past.
