Louis van Gaal’s wife has revealed that she cried after his brutal sacking by Manchester United in 2016.

The Dutchman had just led the Red Devils to the FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, before being sacked two days later following months of speculation about his future at the club.

His wife, Truus, revealed in the Amazon Prime documentary ‘Van Gaal’ that she felt her husband would be sacked, after United legends like Sir Alex Ferguson stopped greeting them while Ed Woodward planned the Dutchman’s departure.

His sacking came just two days after he guided Manchester United to FA Cup glory.

She said, according to Manchester Evening News: “I knew Louis would be sacked by Manchester United. I felt it. We had a little boardroom there and it was always fun with old Manchester legends Ferguson, Bobby Charlton. We had a table in there with good food and drink.

“Suddenly, they stopped waving at us, they just waved from afar. Something was wrong. It was feminine intuition.

Then when the man (Woodward) denies it, Louis accepts it. I told him, ‘Louis, you’re going to be fired. Be wise about it. And I slammed the apartment door shut.

“After the FA Cup final, Louis said: ‘Well, we did it!’ I said, ‘Louis, they say you’ve been fired.

‘He got so angry! Why did you have to crash my party? Stop all this aggressive nonsense!

There had been months of speculation that Ed Woodward (right) was plotting to get the Dutchman sacked.

‘Later, he said, ‘Hi, I’m Louis. You can go home, you were right.’ His voice was cracked, so I said, “Okay, I’m on my way.” When I got home I could see that he had been crying. I hugged him. I also had tears in my eyes.

In the film, Van Gaal has a video call with Wayne Rooney, who recalls that Truus was “mad” after the Cup final.

Rooney himself was upset with Van Gaal’s departure from Old Trafford, telling his former boss: “I was very disappointed because I felt everything was moving in the right direction.” I felt that if you had one more year, we would have been successful.’

Wayne Rooney spoke to Van Gaal in the Amazon Prime documentary and the former Manchester United captain said he was ‘disappointed’ at the time the Dutchman was sacked.

Van Gaal’s sacking came after a season in which he failed to qualify for the Champions League and scored a paltry 49 Premier League goals on his way to fifth place.

The Dutchman spent £284m at the club on the likes of Angel Di Maria, Anthony Martial and Radamel Falcao.

However, Van Dijk complained to Rooney after they didn’t ‘buy the players he wanted’ with moves like Sadio Mane, Sergio Ramos, Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski failing to materialise.

He told the DC United manager: ‘It’s unbelievable. He was in the richest club in the world and he couldn’t buy the players he wanted.

‘Manchester was my most difficult period. I came in as a coach and everything was disappointing. Most of the players in the squad were over 30 years old. It was my job to fix it. Rooney was also approaching 30.’
