Liverpool’s title dream is ‘over’, Mo Salah has been ‘so far off it’ and Reds must make decision over ‘erratic’ Darwin Nunez’s future… Jamie Carragher’s RUTHLESS verdict after brutal derby defeat by Everton

Jamie Carragher has admitted Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes are over after their ‘unacceptable display’ in the Merseyside derby defeat to Everton.

Jürgen Klopp’s side were beaten 2-0 at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on target for the home side.

Carragher admitted his former side’s title hopes have been ended by their rivals, with Liverpool three points behind Arsenal with four games remaining this season.

“This is the end of the title fight for Liverpool,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“It almost feels like the end and they just have to make sure they finish the season really strong.

‘They had plenty of chances at the start of the game, but they weren’t clinical enough in either penalty area.

‘I don’t think this is the time to get too angry with the team or with Jurgen Klopp. It’s been a great ride, a great journey, but tonight is Everton’s night.

The former Liverpool captain claimed Liverpool’s performance at Goodison Park was ‘unacceptable’ in the final weeks of the title race.

The Reds have stumbled in recent weeks with a damaging 2-2 draw against Man United and a 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace damaging their title hopes.

Liverpool also bowed out of the Europa League against Atalanta, with Klopp’s final weeks in charge in danger of disappearing.

Carragher highlighted Mo Salah’s problems in recent weeks as a factor, admitting the club will be forced to consider his future as he enters the final year of his contract and a new manager joins the club.

“Mo Salah looked like a shadow of himself, especially after his injury,” Carragher said. He’s Liverpool’s legend, superstar, one of the all-time greats, but he’s been so far away from it all.

‘I think there is a real discussion going on with the new manager about what the future holds for Mo Salah as he only has a year left on his contract.’

Carragher also questioned Darwin Nunez’s future at Liverpool, suggesting the striker’s finishing remains too erratic for a team looking to win the game’s biggest trophies.

“I think I’m now at the stage with Nunez where a question needs to be asked,” Carragher said.

‘He gives everything, he runs, he causes problems, he gets the occasional goal and assist, but after two years, with Liverpool going for the title this season and those big games, you need him to score at Old Trafford , Goodison, at Atalanta.

‘This is not October or November, this is the business end of the title race.

“We’ve all been on teams where in the first year we said he had to get up to speed, but if you look at it now, I don’t think there will be a huge improvement. I think after two years we’ve seen what he is: he can cause problems and be erratic in his finishing

“I don’t think it’s enough to win the biggest prizes, so I think a big decision has to be made about him.”
