LIV Golf’s civil war rages on as Matthew Wolff hits back at ‘heartbreaking’ criticism from his captain Brooks Koepka…who claimed he had ‘given up’ wasted talent
LIV golfer Matthew Wolff has hit back at “heartbreaking” criticism from Brooks Koepka, claiming it was “extremely disappointing” to learn that his Smash captain had “actually given up on him.”
Koepka sensationally accused his team-mate of ‘giving up’ and ‘wasting’ his talent ahead of the LIV event near London this week.
“I’m not a big fan of that,” said the American PGA champion. “It’s really hard to even have a team dynamic when you have one guy who doesn’t want to work (or put in the effort).”
Wolff responded to Koepka’s comments on Friday, citing his daily battle with mental health and insisting, “I’m trying to win an even BIGGER game with my life.”
“It was more than disappointing for me. When I chose to join his team in 2023, I did so with great optimism about my new home as part of Team Smash and equally importantly the chance to be around and learn from a player of Brooks’ stature Wolff said. Sports illustrated.

“I have had competitive moments in the past where I feel I have let myself down and even others in our new team environment.
“This has been quite difficult for me. My challenges on and off the golf course with my mental health are well documented. I take on those challenges every day.’
Wolff arrived at Centurion Club after finishing 44th at last week’s event in Spain, which followed 49th, 34th, 41st and 44th in his previous four LIV tournaments.
That run includes a withdrawal for the third and final round in Washington DC in May.
“It’s not what a team member expects to hear from their leader,” Wolff said of his Smash captain
But Wolf insisted he has made “positive progress in managing (his) life” and believes his game is turning a corner.
“It is heartbreaking to hear through the media that our team leader has given up on me.
It’s not what a team member expects to hear from their leader and I think we all know these comments should have been handled much differently. But I am moving forward and will never give up on myself. While the results on the track may not seem like positive indicators now, I am trying to win an even BIGGER game with my life.
Finally, I trust Brooks wants the best for our team. But it’s hard to imagine his comments… in any way aligning with those priorities.”
Smash GC’s motto is ‘fight as family’ and their biography reads: ‘Smash see themselves as a family, a tight-knit gang fighting as one. With Smash, it’s all of them or nothing at all. As a unit, fused together by self-confidence and total dedication, they’re here to work, they’re here to fight – and they’re here to win.’
