Mr Trimmer, who moved to WA from Britain as a teenager, graduated from Joondalup Police Academy and moved to Kalgoorlie in 2017, where he became well known in the community playing for the local rugby team.

He starred in the British TV series Wanted Down Under and gave teenagers advice about life in Australia before migrating.

He later joined the gang and the tactical response group.

“This extraordinary officer loved helping the community and was a fine example of WA policing and it is such a tragedy,” Mr Blanch said.

“(He was) a very, very confident, capable young man with his whole life ahead of him, and that’s how sad this is.”

The WA Police Union said Mr Trimmer was a “valued member of the blue family”.

“Every time a police officer is killed, no matter how, it really shakes the core of the police family,” said President Paul Gale.
