Kevin Spacey insists he never offered anyone career help in exchange for sex as he blasts new Channel 4 allegations as ‘ridiculous’ and ‘completely offensive’

Kevin Spacey has insisted he never offered to help anyone in his career in exchange for sex before a new one Channel 4 documentary about the actor.

The 64-year-old star of American Beauty and House Of Cards was cleared of a number of sexual offenses committed by four men between 2001 and 2013, following a trial at Southwark Crown Court in July last year.

But he has been thrust into the spotlight again, with new claims about his past behavior in an upcoming two-part docuseries, Spacey Unmasked, premiering on Channel 4 later this month.

Speaking about the new allegations with former GB News presenter Dan Wootton, Spacey denied he ever ‘told anyone that if he gives me sexual favors I will help him with his career’.

Despite taking “full responsibility” for his past behavior, the American star said he would not apologize to people who “made up” or exaggerated stories about him, labeling the new allegations as “ridiculous” and ‘completely offensive’.

Dan Wootton posted his conversation with Spacey on his Twitter/X last night.

During the interview, Spacey said, “I take full responsibility for my past behavior and actions. But I cannot and will not take responsibility or apologize to anyone who has made things up about me or has exaggerated stories about me.

‘I have never told anyone that if they do me sexual favors, I will help them with their career.

“I’ve obviously been in contact with, you know, some guys who thought they could get ahead in their careers if they had a relationship with me.

“But there was no conversation with me, it was all part of their plan, a plan that was always doomed to fail because I wasn’t involved in the deal.”

Channel 4 announced it had commissioned the upcoming documentary in 2022, saying it will “follow the outcomes of two legal cases against Spacey.”

The documentary will air on Channel 4 on May 6 and 7 at 9pm and will feature new allegations from ten men, including actors Ruari Cannon and Danny De Lillo.

Mr. Cannon made this claim in an interview with The i-newspaper Ahead of the documentary’s release, Spacey touched him in a “very intimate way” during a press night for a theater production at the Old Vic in 2013.

Spacey called the accusation “ridiculous” and denied it ever happened.

Meanwhile, Mr De Lillo claimed that in 2007, when he was 22, the actor pressed his crotch against his face while in a production at the same theatre. An accusation that Spacey said he found “completely insulting.”

Spacey continued, “Were there times where I was flirting with people in their 20s who were involved in those programs? Yes.

‘Have I ever hooked up with another actor? Yes. Did I make a clumsy pass to someone who, it turns out, wasn’t interested? Yes.

“That may not have been the best decision and it’s not the decision I would make today. But it happened. It was not illegal, and it was never alleged to have been illegal.”

Oscar-winning actor Spacey was one of the most well-known faces in Hollywood until allegations of sexual misconduct were made in 2017, with streaming giant Netflix cutting ties with the actor.

He was accused of abusing his fame and power to carry out nine sexual attacks on four men during his tenure as artistic director of the Old Vic theatre. But he insisted the claims were “crazy” and accused the claimants of “lying for money.”

In July 2023, the actor was dramatically acquitted of sexually assaulting the four men following a high-profile trial at Southwark Crown Court, in which Sir Elton John gave evidence in his defense.

Channel 4 released the trailer for Spacey Unmasked last month, in which a voiceover from two men, played over archived footage of the actor, says: ‘This wasn’t just any man… this was Kevin, crazy ‘Spacey’ and “I knew I was in a ‘sell your soul’ situation.”

The show is produced by the channel’s former head of news and current affairs, Dorothy Byrne, who said at the announcement that the show would “follow the story of the abuse allegations against him and the resulting court cases.”

It is believed there will be a ‘forensic look at a man who was once one of the most admired and respected actors in the world’.

It would feature on-camera testimonies from British and American men, whose identities will not be hidden, about their experiences with Spacey over the course of fifty years.

On Thursday, the US star claimed he had ‘repeatedly asked’ Channel 4 to give him more than seven days to respond to allegations made about him in their documentary and said the broadcaster refused.

About

Channel 4 has refused to do so because they believe that asking for a response within seven days to new, anonymised and non-specific allegations is a ‘fair opportunity’ for me to refute any allegations against me.

“I will not sit back and be attacked by a dying network’s one-sided ‘documentary’ about me in their desperate bid for ratings.

‘There is a proper channel to deal with allegations against me and it is not Channel 4.

“Every time I was given time and a proper forum to defend myself, the allegations failed investigation and I was acquitted.”

The American actor then revealed that he will issue a response this weekend, adding that Channel 4 and Roast Beef Productions, who helped produce the show, might be left ‘speechless’.

In response to Spacey’s comments, a Channel 4 spokesperson said: ‘Kevin Spacey has been given ample opportunity to respond.’
