Katy Perry reveals she’s working on a new album and planning another tour

As Katy Perry wraps up her Play residency in Las Vegas later this year, she’s already planning to release a new album and embark on a new tour.

The 38-year-old singer and American Idol judge — who made headlines this weekend for inviting Kim Kardashian’s daughter North to the stage — opened up about her future plans in a new interview with Out.

“I still love making music. I still love to spread light and love. I know there are a lot of people who couldn’t make it to Vegas,” Perry began.

“The last time I was on tour was in 2018. I’m…due. How about that? I have to go out and see the kids who couldn’t make it to Vegas,” Perry teased.

Her residency began at Resorts World in Las Vegas in late December 2021, with the first leg running through mid-January 2022.

Saturday night’s performance concluded the seventh stage of the residency, with a stage in mid-May, another in late July and early August and the final stage running from early October to early November.

When asked about the residency, Perry said, “I’m just so proud of the show we’ve created and performed.”

“It’s such a spectacular show that we love so much. It’s almost a greatest hits show! I call it all thriller, no filler,’ she said.

The singer added, “I wish I could take it to the rest of the world, but it’s just not technically possible to drive through OTT toilets and baths.”

“By closing a chapter on PLAY I can start a new chapter. I am so excited for my story’s potential to continue,” she added.

The singer continued that the residency was something she thought about “pre-pandemic,” but the COVID-19 pandemic gave her time to plan it.

“It was something I started thinking about before the pandemic and [I] was able to take the time and figure it out and do it the right way during that time when everyone was pausing,” she said.

“I was so lucky with the timing of it. I have so many memories of coming to Las Vegas before I had a residency,” added Perry.

“I feel very connected to it. We used to go on vacation here. I used to come to Vegas to visit my grandmother. My parents drop us off in the basement of the Excalibur! I remember it all,” she added.

The Play shows are a tribute to the LGBTQ community, with Perry admitting that without them she wouldn’t be where she is today in her career.

“First of all, I wouldn’t be here without the support of the gay community. They’ve been such great admirers and fans and influences to me,” said Perry.

“The fanbase that comes to this show is very much that community. I would say it’s probably about 50% of the audience,” she added.

“I think they feel connected to the music. I think they feel safe. I think they love the OTT of the show and it’s a really hammy show,” she added.

“I would call this a show for the community. I channel my most Cher, my most Liza Minnelli, my most pop girl on this show. I change my costume all the time. I just give them, I feel like, what they want,’ Perry continued.

Despite working on a new album and planning a new tour, she still has one big “bucket list” item: being a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

It’s definitely on my bucket list. We just try to find the best date to do it. I love Ru and that’s an iconic show. I am inspired by that show on a daily basis,” she said.
