Katie Holmes says ‘unfortunately all women understand sexual assault’

Katie Holmes gave a candid and extensive interview Glamor on Wednesday, where she discussed sexual assault, her daughter Suri and how she doesn’t think she’s “sexy.”

The Dawson’s Creek actress, 44, promoted her new film Rare Objects – which she directed – with the publication when she spoke about family and her fame.

In the film, there is an early scene where the young protagonist Benita, played by Julia Mayorga, is attacked.

She said of shooting the sensitive moment, “What mattered most to me was what it did [Benita] in the aftermath. Unfortunately for me [sexual assault] is a known secret among women, so we don’t have to share too much to know what we’re talking about.

“Julia was so incredible in that scene, and that was really hard to shoot because I just needed her face.

“I kept saying to both actors, ‘It’s your faces. And so they really had to go there. Everyone was pretty upset afterwards.’

She looked fabulous for the Glamor cover, wearing a sheer black and white top with gold detailing and a nose ring.

Other looks saw her pose in a cut-out gold dress with a statement belt before changing into a quirky white corset top and gray trousers.

Rare Objects is based on Kathleen Tessaro’s 2016 novel of the same name.

Although the book is set just after the Great Depression, Holmes’ film is set in modern New York City.

The film revolves around a young woman trying to rebuild her life by working in an antique shop before various figures from her past resurface.

Elsewhere during the interview, she gave a rare insight into family life with her 16-year-old daughter Suri – who she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise.

She said it was very important to “protect her” because her only child was “so visible at a young age.”

Katie added that she was “grateful” to be her parent because she is such an “incredible person.”

Katie’s new movie Rare Objects will be released both in theaters and on demand on Friday.
