Katie Couric and Kelly Ripa lead stars paying tribute to 9/11 victims – 23 years after terror attacks

Katie Couric was one of the first celebrities to commemorate the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on Wednesday, the 23rd anniversary of the attacks.

The 67-year-old celebrity journalist, who became a grandmother this year, shared a clip of her 9/11 news reporting with disgraced former co-host Matt Lauer on Instagram.

Addressing her nearly two million followers, she wrote a reflective caption: ‘The day the sky was clear, cerulean blue. The day 2,977 souls perished. The daydreams were snuffed out. The day medical professionals mobilized and waited in hospitals across the city, but no one came.’

The letter continued: “The day New Yorkers walked around in a daze and the nation, in fact the world, was in shock. The day the nightmare began for so many families. The day we came together as a country in the face of unspeakable evil. The day I will never forget.”

Kelly Ripa and Mark Wahlberg also used their Instagram platforms to commemorate this tragic day in history.

Kelly, 53, took to Instagram Stories to share a nighttime photo of a spotlight shining over the New York City skyline, where the Twin Towers used to be, and captioned it, “#neverforget.”

And Mark, also 53, uploaded a photo of the 9/11 memorial, writing: ‘We will never forget.’

Kris Jenner, 68, also took to social media to celebrate the anniversary, with the mother of six posting a tribute from Instagram account The NYC Walking Show.

Under the clip she wrote: ‘Today we honor those who lost their lives 23 years ago and remember the heroes who stood up that day.’

The entertainment mogul continued: “We will never forget this and our condolences go out to the families whose lives have been changed forever.”

Journalist Maria Shriver also joined the Hollywood camp of people who still remember the tragedy.

The media personality posted her 2001 news item reporting on the devastating news on NBC in Los Angeles.

In her caption — which was identical to the one she posted last year — she said, “On this day I always look back fondly on this interview with Deena Burnett (now Bailey) and her family for @datelinenbc about the heroic actions of her husband, Tom Burnett, one of the men who tried to stop the terrorists on United 93.”

She added: ‘I spoke with Deena again in 2016 for @thesundaypaper where she reminded me, “It’s great to remember, but better to honor. Honor comes from living a life worthy of the sacrifice.” Let’s carry that advice with us today and every day as we honor those we’ve lost.’

Shriver addressed her 1.5 million followers, adding: “Today is one of the most somber, painful days in the history of our country. It is especially painful for all of those families who lost someone they loved. They had to live without.

“May we think of them today. May we all hold space for them. Be kind to everyone today, because we do not know how this day triggers our neighbors.”

She concluded the post thoughtfully, “And may we continue to be grateful for all the first responders who rushed to save their fellow citizens. They didn’t care who they were. They just cared. They put their lives on the line. Thank you to them and their families. #911neverforget.”
