The ex-Manchester United defender, who won 81 caps for the Three Lions, was given the honor a day after he turned 44 in recognition of his contributions to sport and charitable work.
It comes after the sports star turned expert created the Rio Ferdinand Foundation to support youth in underserved communities.

Rio has spent years battling a range of issues, from racism to a lack of social mobility for children and young adults.
Speaking after the Prince of Wales awarded him an OBE at an investiture ceremony, Ferdinand said: “I have a platform because of football, but it’s about using that and using it in the right way so that it can influence other people, which was always the drive for me.’
Kate and Rio, who first started dating in 2017 – two years after his late wife Rebecca died following a battle with breast cancer.
The couple tied the knot in an extravagant wedding ceremony in Turkey in 2019 and share 23-month-old son Cree.
