Josh Windass aims ruthless dig at Michael Duff after netting winner for Sheffield Wednesday

‘Unlucky!’: Josh Windass aims for brutal digs at Barnsley boss Michael Duff after scoring Sheffield Wednesday’s winner in the League One play-off final… for ‘said we were out’ following the defeat of Peterborough

  • Wednesday turned a four-goal deficit from their semi-final first leg
  • They beat Barnsley to gain promotion after two years in League One
  • Windass scored deep into stoppage time to ensure promotion

Sheffield Wednesday hero Josh Windass launched a brutal attack on Barnsley manager Michael Duff following his side’s promotion.

Windass scored the winner for his side in the third minute of stoppage time in extra time in the League One play-off final to send his side back to the Championship for the first time in three years.

Wednesday were promoted against the odds after losing the first leg of the semi-final to Peterborough 4–0, but they came back from behind to win on penalties after a 5–1 win in the second leg.

They had to wait against the 10-man Barnsley, but the wait was worth it as Windass thrilled Wednesday fans with his late strike.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, the emotional striker mentioned Duff, who had apparently been written off on Wednesday after the loss to Peterborough.

“To be honest I heard their manager left our game against Peterborough,” he said. “He said we were gone, what a bad luck.”

The striker is the second member of his family to score at Wembley after his father Dean scored for Hull in the 2008 play-off final against Hull City.

Windass Jr admitted he wasn’t thinking about that though, in a game that lacked quality throughout.

“Probably the worst game you’ll ever see,” he said. β€œThe level of both teams was shocking, to be honest. No real quality to be seen and luckily we got the winning goal.

“He scored a better goal. I didn’t think about that to be honest. we worked all week on me playing up front and trying to get to the edge of the box for cuts and luckily it worked out at the last minute.’

Windass scored 15 goals in their promotion campaign on Wednesday and made seven assists as they finished third in the division.

It is unclear if he will stay at the club after their promotion to the Championship with his deal, but the club has the option to extend his stay for a further 12 months.
