Jonnie Irwin gives an update on his home renovations as he gives a glimpse at the porch’s construction amid his terminal cancer battle
Jonnie Irwin has provided an update on his ongoing home renovation and given fans a glimpse into the construction of his new porch.
The TV presenter, 49, took to Instagram on Thursday to show off the latest step in the renovation, filming himself explaining what the finished product will look like.
Jonnie, who is battling cancer after first being diagnosed in 2020, said the building process has been ‘very positive’ but admitted he has ‘decision fatigue’.
Jonnie took a selfie video while wearing a green track jacket and stood in front of his family home as he showed off how the bare bones of the porch were built.
A portico is a porch leading to the entrance of a building and features a roof structure above a walkway, supported by columns or enclosed by walls.

A wooden frame had been placed around the existing structure of the house and wood paneling had been added as the project looked good.
“Quick update on the project then,” he began. ‘The porch is enormous and is really starting to take shape. The upholstery is also on it.’
Talking about how a large window would be built on the first floor, he continued, “I love that big open window. I think a big window will make a difference to the design.
“You noticed the cedar cladding, but I didn’t want to pretend it wasn’t a 1960s building. I didn’t want it to be all cladding, but if you step back you’ll see there’s a window and you’ve got half-height cladding.”
However, he did talk about one change he wants to make to the extension, as he said: ‘The builders will love me, but I think it should be full height otherwise it will look a bit half-length. So that’s a conversation I’m going to have to have. They seem very open to it.’
He also said the side of the porch will have a wall of burnt cedar black wood panels, but will also have a doorway leading to the garden.
He continued: ‘I’m looking forward to this too. This is going to be all solid wood, all solid like burnt cedar black panels, but it will have a doorway in it so he can get into the yard and get the bins out, so I’m pretty happy with that design.
‘Then we also have to decide again, the covering for this floor now, clinker paving or cobblestones.’

Construction: Jonnie then said they had yet to decide what to do with the rest of the garden, as he admitted he was getting ‘decision fatigue’

‘I’m currently suffering from decision fatigue, but now it’s getting exciting. Things are going up rather than being ripped off, so it’s all very positive,” he added.
Jonnie, who is married to Jessica Holmes, has been renovating the inside and outside of his family home and has been giving fans updates along the way.
As builders started building the front of the house last month, Jonnie told fans about some of the changes they had in store.
He said, “The plan is to put in a bunch of different designer windows, drop those windows a little bit, then tear down that porch and move the doorway to the center of the house.
‘This places this large room in the middle of the house, a kind of connecting room. That makes it an entry hall, which I think will be more pleasant to live in and better for the house once it’s finished. Early days, but quite exciting.’
Jonnie shares three young children – Rex, four, and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac – with his wife Jessica.
It comes after Jonnie gave fans a health update last month amid his terminal cancer battle.

The former A Place In The Sun presenter took to Instagram to praise the NHS after attending an MRI and CT scan to monitor his illness.
Jonnie was surprised to find that his scan took place in an unlikely location and not in a hospital.
He shared on his social media that he was scanned in portable scanners at a nearby recreation center parking lot.
He said: ‘I’ve had a few scans today. Not in a hospital, but in a recreation center parking lot. MRI and CT unit. Surprising in this.
‘I actually had a great experience. We were able to park almost in front of the door, no queue and it was ready and dusted within 15 minutes. Well done #nhs.”
