Joanna Lumley criticises young people for avoiding unpaid work

“The world can do very well without you!” Joanna Lumley, 76, criticizes young people for avoiding unpaid work and says they need to understand ‘it’s a hard old world’

Joanna Lumley has criticized young people for avoiding unpaid work.

The star, 76, claimed the new generation doesn’t have the work ethic or determination she had when she was younger.

She said, “I think this is something new. People who think: “I can’t! Why should I make tea and coffee? Why should I wait after working hours and do the unpaid work?”

‘I’m afraid the answer is: this is how it should be. I’m afraid that’s how it works.’

Joanna added in the chat with i News: ‘We must try to make the young people understand that it is a hard old world. It’s beautiful, but it’s heavy. You must understand that the world can do very well without you. Without any of us!’

The actress also claimed that when she started in the 1960s, it was hard, but people tried to push harder and try “everything.”

It’s because the legendary star recently released a documentary that catalogs her fame from the beginning in The New Avengers.

Elsewhere, Joanna recently shared how her beloved Absolutely Fabulous character was almost non-existent after co-star Jennifer Saunders “wasn’t remotely amused” by her attempts to connect with her.

In quotes obtained by The mirror, she said, “She didn’t react at all, she read her stuff, looked bored. And I thought, “Oh, this is terrible.”

“I said, ‘Can I call you Jen?’ She said, ‘No.’

“I went home, called my agent and said, ‘Can you get me out of here? It’s going to be an agony.”

Joanna added how her agent persuaded her to stay and the pair’s next meeting was much more pleasant.

‘Ab Fab’, as it was affectionately known, became a hugely successful hit and Joanna – who played Patsy for 20 years – said filming with Jennifer was ‘hysterical’.

The Channel 5 documentary sees Joanna admit that one scene almost sent the pair over the edge.

When talking about an elderly Patsy who loses her pants while accidentally sniffing a bee, Joanna said:

“When I die, I just want that to be played at my funeral.”

The documentary also features special interviews with Joanna’s Absolutely Fabulous co-stars Helen Lederer and Jane Horrocks.

Each person offers their own insights about working with Joanna on some of her most celebrated projects.
