Maternal mortality: The happy news comes as Janai reports on the high maternal mortality rate in the US, which affects women of color the most. Maternal mortality among black women was 69.9 per 100,000 in 2020, compared to 32.9 for all races; seen in 2020
Figures from 2021 indicated that 32.9 women per 100 thousand died of a maternal death. Those deaths have increased significantly compared to 2020 and 2019.
For black women, that number rose to 69.9 per 100,000. Maternal mortality for all races has increased significantly, according to data from the CDC.
The reasons for the large differences include the preference for black women and the lack of access to care. Women who do not receive antenatal care are three to four times more likely to die.
“While I was doing that report, I found out I was pregnant. Of course it then takes a much more personal toll. Those numbers are real. It would be foolish to think I’m somehow above that or it couldn’t happen to me,” she said.
