A 23-year-old jockey who was taken to hospital on Monday after falling during a race is in a serious condition but making ‘good progress’.
Ivy Lam was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Monday after falling from her horse, Jacobs Gate, during the 1500m Willow Grove Stud Handicap at Gawler Racecourse in Adelaide.
About 700 meters into the race the horse began to fall back into the field before collapsing and the jockey fell to the ground. The horse died after the incident.
Lam, who works for the stable of Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle, has ridden 16 winners in 139 races since she started her riding career in January.
On Tuesday, Racing South Australia chief Vaughn Lynch provided an update on Lam’s condition to members of the media, stating that the jockey had suffered a ‘cerebral haemorrhage’ and had ‘some broken vertebrae’. The official added that it “appears Lam will avoid surgery at this stage” and that he is also “hopeful of a full recovery.”

Racing South Australia released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, saying: ‘Statement from Racing SA student Ivy Lam is in a stable condition at RAH [Royal Adelaide Hostpital] where she is being treated today for injuries sustained in a fall during R7 at Gawler.
‘Ivy was injured when her horse Jacob’s Gate suffered a medical episode and collapsed at 700 metres.
‘Racing SA Stewards and First Care Medical attended immediately and attempted to stabilize her condition before SA Ambulance paramedics arrived. We have learned that Ivy regained consciousness before being flown to RAH where she is currently undergoing scans.
‘We are extremely grateful to everyone involved in Ivy’s care. Racing SA is in close contact with Ivy’s family and we will provide further updates as possible.”
The Australian Jockey’s Association also sent their best wishes to Lam following the incident.
“We send our wishes to SA student Ivy Lam, who was involved in a serious fall at Gawler today. Our thoughts are with you Ivy for a speedy and full recovery,” the organization wrote.
