Ivy Getty and Tobias Engel divorce: Inside the couple’s 3-day San Francisco wedding attended by Anya Taylor-Joy and officiated by Nancy Pelosi as the pair call time on their marriage

When billionaire oil heiress Ivy Getty sealed her marriage to Tobias Engel with a kiss at City Hall in San Francisco, the bridal crown she was wearing fell from her head.

It was a moment the guests quickly forgot as they were immediately serenaded with Myra’s Miracles Happen, from the hit film Princess Diaries, but now that Ivy is filing for divorce after just a few years of marriage, they may think it was a moment of foreboding.

Tying the knot in November 2021 (after a private ceremony eleven months earlier), when the Covid pandemic was still sweeping through communities, meant large gatherings were a risky proposition. Nevertheless, Ivy, great-granddaughter of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, managed to make her miracle happen when she wore a mirrored wedding gown by John Galliano as she walked down the aisle at a ceremony officiated by Nancy Pelosi.

Ivy, who is also a model, was joined by bridesmaids including actress Anya Taylor-Joy as well as several cousins, with every detail of the fantasy union documented in the pages of Vogue.

Ivy previously told Vogue that she and Tobias, known to friends and family as ‘Toby’, got engaged during one of the couple’s many trips abroad, in Capri.

She revealed that they had attended a Unicef ball a few days earlier, before deciding to spend some time in Italy, and went out for dinner one evening but, in a break from the couple’s usual routine, Toby chose restaurant for dinner.

Although Ivy said she was always the one to choose the couple’s dinner plans, she happily went along with her partner’s choice — and when they arrived at the restaurant, everything became clear.

‘When the sun was about to set, we went outside to take pictures of it. Toby set the timer on his iPhone and got down on one knee. The timer went off at the perfect time because we got the most incredible photo,” she said.

The ring was a large stone surrounded by diamonds that came from a necklace given to Ivy by her grandmother as a teenager – which the heiress said had enormous sentimental value to her and always put a “smile” on her face.

However, the couple couldn’t fully dive into wedding planning just yet as the world was still in the grip of the pandemic that threw everything into uncertainty. So, like the rest of the world, they stayed calm.

Sadly, Ivy lost two family members in 2020; her grandmother Ann, an interior designer, and her father John Gilbert Getty. An autopsy later concluded that John had died of a fentanyl overdose combined with heart disease.

As the bride and her fourteen bridesmaids got ready for the big day at City Hall, they held a “pajama party” to celebrate the upcoming nuptials.

The late John Galliano, who designed Ivy’s mirrored wedding dress, revealed that he also designed all fourteen of the bridesmaids’ dresses – something he wouldn’t normally do because the wedding dress itself takes up so much time.

However, he said he was “enchanted” by Ivy and her stories about the women who accompanied her down the aisle, so he decided to make an exception.

As the ceremony took place, with Nancy Pelosi in front of the couple, guests were charmed by Toby’s vows in which he said Ivy had been the “greatest gift” of his life.

After the ceremony, guests moved to the Getty Mansion for the wedding reception – after which Ivy changed into her second wedding dress, a lace couture gown from Maison Margiela.

After a night of partying, San Francisco’s elite called it a night around 1 a.m.

Reflecting on the three-day extravaganza, Ivy said: ‘It’s been everything I could have dreamed of and more.’

But two and a half years later, the couple’s fairy tale has come to an end, as Ivy has filed for divorce, according to Page Six. The couple entered into a prenuptial agreement to protect her billionaire family’s assets.

“Obviously, as a member of the Getty family, Ivy is cautious about legal entanglements,” a source told the publication.

According to the court documents, this is a ‘contested’ divorce.

That means the former couple did not reach a settlement with a mediator before Getty filed the paperwork.

Ivy has since deleted some photos with Engel from her Instagram, although he still appears in some carousel posts from their wedding.
