ITV lectures viewers about going green… So why did Love Island’s Maya take the 12,000-mile journey?

Love Island host Maya Jama and her ‘glam squad’ traveled 12,000 miles round trip to host just ten minutes of the show, despite ITV lecturing its viewers on how they can improve your carbon footprint to save the planet.

The presenter, her hairdresser, make-up artist and clothes stylist flew from the UK to Cape Town to record footage for last Friday’s and Sunday’s episodes of the winter version of the reality show before flying back, after of only 24 hours in South Africa.

On Friday, Maya was on screen for just five minutes and five seconds, and on Sunday she was on screen for five minutes and 15 seconds.

Scenes for both shows were filmed from the luxurious villa at the same time.

Maya, who wore a £390 orange dress from Spanish brand Syndical Chamber, thanked her three staff – hairstylist Jay Birmingham, her make-up artist Letitia Sophia and her stylist Rhea Francois – for their work on Instagram.

The four also posed for a photo together, though it’s unclear if it was taken during the trip last week or in early January when they traveled to Cape Town for the launch of the show.

Although the journey was made on a commercial flight, Love Island members were appalled that such an environmentally unfriendly journey was made when ITV issued a mandate headlined with the slogan: “The biggest shows with the smallest footprint”.

If they were flying premium economy, each person’s carbon footprint would have been 4.58 metric tons of CO2.

The UK’s average carbon footprint is around ten tonnes of CO2 per person per year.

The channel also says publicly that it wants to be net zero by 2030, adding on its website: “We all have a part to play in tackling the climate crisis, at ITV we are focusing on small changes that have a big impact.”

He continues: “Small changes you can make, here are some actions we’re taking at ITV that we can all do at home too.”

He then tells viewers to walk, bike, or take the bus, instead of using a car, eat more vegetables, repair and reuse items like clothing, switch to renewable energy, and reduce food waste.

ITV launched their campaign to help the environment in 2021 when they held their Climate Action Week which ran alongside Cop26.

A Love Island source said: ‘This is completely hypocritical. For ITV to go out and tell the general public how to improve their carbon footprint, but then their show consumes so much in just ten minutes of one show seems wrong.’

Maya, 28, is currently on holiday in Dubai after hosting the show’s spin-off series Love Island: Aftersun on Sunday night in Elstree, Hertfordshire, and will return to South Africa for the finale later this month.

However, she may appear from the villa one more time before the series ends.

The summer version of the show is filmed in Mallorca, but ITV bosses moved the winter show to South Africa because the weather is warmer.

Hypocritical: Although the trip was taken on a commercial flight, Love Island members are dismayed that such an eco-friendly trip took place.
