It’s good to be a quack! Giant rubber duck returns to Hong Kong harbor after ten years… and this time the 60ft bird has a friend

  • The two 18 meter high rubber ducks enter Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong

It’s not every day you see a giant 18-foot-tall rubber duck floating in Hong Kong waters, let alone two.

But ten years after Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s giant ‘Rubber Duck’ statue made waves by appearing in Victoria Habour, the rubber toy is back – and this time with a new friend.

The two bright yellow inflatable ducks will enter the harbor this weekend to undergo their sea trials in the run-up to Hofman’s new exhibition ‘Double Ducks’ this weekend.

Hofman made his debut in 2007 with the original duck with the aim of ‘putting a smile on your face’.

Since then, the duck has been seen around the world in countries such as China, New Zealand, Belgium, Japan and the United States.

The duck first visited Hong Kong in 2013 and on the tenth anniversary of that visit, the yellow rubber has sailed to the city again – this time accompanied by a friend.

The pair underwent sea trials in Victoria Harbor near Tsing Yi Island in late May ahead of the exhibition’s official opening on June 10, during which the ducks will circumnavigate Hong Kong for two weeks.

The huge ducks were pulled along by two boats that looked small compared to the oversized bath toys.

Hofman said his latest art instillation aims to represent unity and togetherness.

“Covid-19 has taught us that spending time together is so valuable,” Hofman said in a statement.

‘Making real moments and memories, living in the here and now, are things to hold on to. “Double Ducks” is not about looking back in the past, but enjoying the moment together.’

The exhibition’s organizer, All Rights Reserved, says the Double Ducks are “icons of happiness” and aim to “spread the healing power of art and bring joy to everyone through this large-scale public art exhibition.”

They added: “Hofman’s free imagination of childlike wonder has gained audience attention and inspires people to take a break from their mundane day-to-day lives and connect with each other.”

Hofman has used his original rubber duck worldwide. In 2014, it was spotted entering the Port of Los Angeles.

And in 2013, it arrived in Victoria Harbor to much fanfare before mysteriously deflating overnight before blowing up again days later.
