“I wasn’t touring with Elvis anymore, I had lost my job and my mother was very ill, and then there was more crazy, completely crazy stuff going on.

‘I felt like I wanted to make a record with my own songs, which I had collected and never played for anyone.

“So I sent an email to the engineer I’d worked with on the road with Elvis with three really terribly recorded demos on my computer.

“I was actually sending that email before the heart attack. I sweat just thinking about it. My hands are very clammy right now.

“But I sent him those demos hoping he would say, ‘I don’t think you’re ready to be on the record.’ But he loved them and so I went to St. Louis and made this record.”
