I’m an American and tried a traditional British drink… here’s why I liked it

An American food and drink reviewer reviewed a beloved traditional British drink and said he loved it.

Kalani Smith, 25, visited Brits R Us in Massachusetts to pick up a rare can of dandelion and burdock before delivering judgment to millions of followers on his TikTok account – Kalani ghost hunter.

Dandelion and burdock have been commonly consumed in Britain since the Middle Ages and have a fizzy, spicy flavor with a hint of anise.

Its specific origins are unknown, but one false story about it is that it was first brewed by the 13th century theologian St. Thomas Aquinas.

Today, Kalani said, “I can definitely see it being an acquired taste, but I like root beer and sarsparilla (and) this is very similar to that.”

Dandelion and burdock have been commonly consumed in the British Isles since medieval times and have a fizzy, spicy flavor with a hint of anise.

The review inspired many of the 25-year-old’s followers to reminisce about the oft-forgotten drink

After avoiding potential violations with that review and giving the drink an eight out of 10, Kalani stuck his neck out and admitted that “I don’t rate it any higher than Irn-Bru.”

And there was a lot of love for the drink in the comments, with another TikTok user adding: ‘I haven’t had one of these in years!

‘This makes me want to get one! But I agree (sic), definitely an acquired taste.”

Others said the drink was ‘top notch’ and ‘my favourite’.

Many more people remembered the combination of a dandelion and burdock with fish and chips.

The light acidity of the carbonated pop’s spicy flavor is seen as a good accompaniment to rich, fatty fish, rather than an overly sweet soft drink.

The drink is also marketed for its relative health benefits compared to alternative pop.

Dandelion is a rich source of vitamins A and C and also contains iron and zinc. The plant is a traditional remedy for anemia, skin problems and blood disorders.

Although dandelion and burdock root infusions are typically part of a dandelion and burdock recipe, they are not the only flavoring.

Other common ingredients include concentrated fruit juice, caramel and other sweeteners.
