I’m A Celeb’s Myleene Klass recalls being told to lose weight in front of 24 male cast members

Myleene Klass recalled being publicly told at the age of 18 to lose weight for her role in the West End musical Miss Saigon.

The TV personality, 45, made the reveal during Friday’s episode when she had a heart-to-heart with fellow campmate Carol Vorderman, 62.

Myleene explained, “When I joined the Miss Saigon cast, I stood in line with all the other girls and was told, ‘You have to lose weight.’

She said the rude remark was made in front of her 24 male cast members who starred in the production as American G.I’s.

Adding: “I wasn’t pulled aside and I just stood there and it swallowed me up.”

Myleene appeared in the tragic love story set in the Vietnam War alongside Jonathan Pryce, 75, which premiered at London’s Theater Royal Drury Lane in 1989.

Later in the conversation, she talked about body shaming when she joined the band Hear’Say in 2001 after being formed on the reality show Popstars.

Proverb: And then I got into the band and other band managers came up to me saying, ‘You’re the fattest band in pop.

‘Newspapers wrote it then – you don’t have to look long to find those headlines. So again, instead of us having talent, I could read any music, play most of the instruments you put in front of me – it came back to ‘thickest band in pop’.

Elsewhere, Myleene revealed that she was told early in her career to change her name because it was too “ethnic.”

The presenter, whose mother is Filipino and father Chinese, said she had been advised to use her middle name ‘Angela’ but refused.

Telling campmate Carol: ‘I was asked to change my name. I was told people wouldn’t be able to pronounce it because it was quite an ethnic name.

“You’d be fired if you said something like that now. I was told to use my middle name. My middle name is Angela.’

Emotional scenes later unfolded when Helen Flanagan was treated to a phone call home with her children.

The former Coronation Street actress, 32, is mother to Matilda, seven, Delilah, four, and Charlie, two, with ex-fiance Scott Sinclair.

Helen was nominated to talk to her offspring for 90 seconds, with the ex-soap star being chosen over Myleene because Helen had been in camp longer.

Myleene, who is mum to daughters Ava, 15, Hero, 12, and son Apollo, three, burst into tears at the news.

Although Myleene insisted she was over the moon for Helen and thrilled to hear that her children were doing well, the singer was devastated that she had not been chosen.

A delighted Helen went to a nearby clearing for her call, while her mother Julia answered the phone and told her that the girls had behaved so well.
