I refuse to attend my sister-in-law’s wedding because of her stupid dress code: ‘It could kill me but she thinks I’m being selfish’

A bride has been criticized for demanding her guests adhere to an ‘unreasonable’ and ‘potentially fatal’ dress code at her wedding.

Lisa*, an expectant mother, revealed that her husband’s 36-year-old sister was getting married and asked all her guests to dress in long dresses with long sleeves, despite the wedding taking place outside during the day in the middle of summer.

The wedding location in the southern United States has an average maximum temperature in summer of 33 degrees Celsius.

‘I’m currently 34 weeks pregnant and get overheated very easily – and the wedding is taking place entirely outside in the middle of the day where it’s incredibly hot. I can’t sit in a long dress with long sleeves in the heat for eight hours,” the 25-year-old wrote.

Lisa caused a stir by telling the bride that she could not attend the wedding if she refused to compromise on the dress code because she had to “look after (her own) health.”

Lisa initially tried to compromise by sending the bride several types of dresses for her to wear, but they were “only ankle length” or “not formal enough” for the wedding.

“(My sister-in-law) he’s adamant about exactly what she wants. I told her yesterday that I can’t attend her wedding if she doesn’t want to deviate even a little from the dress code.

“She has the right to have her wedding exactly how she wants it to be her perfect day, but I have the right to take care of my own health.”

Lisa then revealed that her SIL ‘freaked out’ and called her ‘selfish’ for refusing to attend the wedding.

“She told me that ‘for once it’s not about me and my damn baby’ – which she only said because she’s jealous that I’m having the first grandchild and she felt like she should have had a baby before me and my man,” the expectant mother said.

Several of Lisa’s in-laws want her to “compromise for one day” to “keep the peace,” but Lisa and her husband have chosen to abstain from the wedding in protest.

“I don’t think I need to risk my health for her wedding,” Lisa said finally.

An expectant mother revealed her husband’s sister was getting married and asked her guests to wear long, long-sleeved dresses for a midday black tie wedding

There was support for Lisa online, with some accusing the bride of ‘cruel’ behaviour.

“There’s no way I could adhere to her dress code. “I just went outside in a t-shirt and jeggings in 25 degrees Celsius and I overheated and I didn’t go out for eight hours,” said one pregnant woman.

Another wrote: ‘I would have definitely said no to this for the same reasons! If they wanted it outside, they should have paid more attention to the sleeves. If they wanted sleeves, they should have had them inside the air conditioning.”

‘With overheated people drinking alcohol… I hope there’s an ambulance on call!’ one man commented.

Several people also pointed out that black tie clothing was completely inappropriate for these circumstances.

‘Black tie is for the evening. This bride thinks she’s super elegant, but she’s actually making a big mistake. And the best thing an invite should say is ‘black tie’ – further instructions are just rude,” one woman revealed.
