Impressive development in backpacker Peter Falconio’s search as human remains are found in the Outback near where he and his girlfriend Joanne Lees were ambushed over 20 years ago in the event they took over Australia.

Detectives are investigating whether the remains of backpacker Peter Falconio may have been discovered near the place where he was last seen alive.

Bone fragments were found this week near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, just a few hundred kilometers from where he was shot in 2001.

The area where the remains were found is consistent with where authorities have long believed her convicted murderer, Bradley Murdoch, dumped her body.

Northern Territory Police have made multiple searches for the body of the British tourist over the years and are hopeful of finding it.

Remains discovered in 2003, 2004 and 2007 found nothing related to Mr. Falconio, nine newspapers informed.

Bradley Murdoch (pictured), who was convicted of murdering Mr. Falconio, has maintained his innocence.

the police said the age and location of the bones found this week match the case of Mr. Falconio.

Forensic experts will find out if they belong to the backpacker using DNA and dental records.

Murdoch has refused to tell police where the body is located and has maintained his innocence.

Mr. Falconio and his girlfriend Joanne Lees were in a caravan driving down the remote Stuart Highway on July 14, 2001 when they were pulled over.

Drug dealer Bradley Murdoch drove up behind them on the stretch of road between Alice Springs and Darwin and indicated that there was a mechanical problem with his truck.

Lees told detectives that when the men went to investigate the problem, she heard a gunshot before Murdoch tried to kidnap her.

She managed to escape, hiding in the bushes for hours while Murdoch searched for her until he stopped a truck and raised the alarm, but no trace of her boyfriend’s body was ever found.

Murdoch was convicted of the murder in December 2005 and sentenced to life in prison, with a non-parole period of 28 years.
