An Australian mum of two shared a lesser known “hack” to make strawberries last longer in the fridge.

in a tik tok video, Andie Barber claims the simple tactic will keep fruit fresh for up to two weeks.

“My nana recently stayed at our house…and my daughter loves berries,” Andie said in the clip, adding, “And we buy them from Woolies, just in these bins.”

Andie held up the basket of strawberries that have holes in the packaging for airflow, but said the fruit usually only lasts “a couple of days” in plastic.

Upon hearing the complaint, Andie’s grandmother suggested an alternative.

Then my nanna said, “Why don’t you keep them in glass jars?” And I was like, “I don’t know, nanna. Why don’t I just keep them in glass jars?” Andie said.

So i tried it. I tried it. I had some strawberries in this glass jar… Look at the strawberry. It is perfect. It’s been in the fridge for probably almost two weeks.

Andie was surprised that the fruit lasted so long by making the simple change and held up a strawberry to the camera before taking a bite.

In the comments to the video, Andie also revealed that the trick works on strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries.

The glass jar was filled with fruit and stored with the lid on.

It is understood that berries spoil faster when kept in plastic supermarket baskets, as holes in the packaging often let air and bacteria in, while airtight glass jars slow this process down.

Why do strawberries last longer in a glass jar?

Plastic containers or grocery baskets often let in air and bacteria, which starts the rotting process.

Sealed, airtight glass jars minimize this and slow spoilage.

The simple method is said to work for strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries.
