The terrifying moment a car was swallowed by a sinkhole after crashing into a fire hydrant in Phoenix was caught on camera.

Around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday near 75th Avenue and Virginia Avenue, two cars crashed and collided with a fire hydrant, causing water to pour onto the road.

The water made the ground swampy, creating a sinkhole that then enveloped one of the cars.

A gruesome video shows the car being slowly sucked underground until only the roof is visible.

One woman was taken to hospital in critical condition, while three others suffered minor injuries.

Video from the scene shows a car with a broken bumper sitting diagonally on the road.

The other car is just visible from the side of the road in a mud puddle.

One of the cars struck a fire hydrant during the collision, causing water to flow onto the road and surrounding muddy ground.

The mud thickened as the water covered the road and the spots then completely filled with water and turned into a sinkhole.

The car on the side of the road slowly disappeared from view as it was sucked beneath the surface of the muddy water and ground.

The drivers have not yet been identified and it is not clear whether they were trapped in the car when it was flooded.

Witness Devin Friebe told Fox10, “I came into the office this morning to work and I didn’t have a parking spot because the whole place was flooded.”
