The BBC announced it would remove Holby City, a fictional city based on Bristol, last year as it continues its path to appear more northerly, prompting a furious reaction among fans.

The long-running medical drama has been filmed at the corporation’s London Elstree Studios for the past 23 years.

But the show was at odds with the BBC’s ‘Across the UK’ plan to move TV shows and staff out of London to kill off the idea of so-called ‘Southern bias’.

With three major soap operas set in the south (the others being Eastenders and Casualty), Holby City was seen as the easiest to dismiss as Casualty’s Cardiff base helped meet the diversity directive.

Instead, Holby City’s production costs will be used to fund two replacement soaps over the next three years; one set in the north of England and another in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

The BBC said in a statement: “We are incredibly proud of Holby City. But it is with great sadness that we announce that after 23 years, the show will end on screen in March of next year.

Role: David played Dominic Copeland in the medical drama

Character: Camilla played Zosia March in the long-running drama

Party: Rob played Arthur Digby until he left the show in 2016

“Sometimes we have to make difficult decisions to accommodate new opportunities and as part of the BBC’s commitment to do more programs across the UK.

“We have made the difficult decision to close the program in order to reshape the BBC drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the incredible team at BBC Studios and all the cast and crew who have been involved with the show since 1999.

“Holby has been a stalwart with audiences, delighting millions of viewers every week and winning hundreds of awards with a compelling mix of cutting-edge medical stories and explosive personal stories.”
