- Star prepared for a crucial season in terms of career
- Smith's contract expires at the end of 2024
- Speculation that he was on his way away from the Dogs
Western Bulldogs star Bailey Smith will miss the entire 2024 AFL season after suffering a serious knee injury in training.
The 23-year-old midfielder was injured midway through Wednesday's training session, with scans confirming damage to the anterior cruciate ligament.
“We are all extremely disappointed for Bailey and deeply sympathize with him,” Bulldogs director of football Chris Grant said.
Smith (pictured during Bulldogs training) is one of the most high-profile players in the AFL and his pre-season loss is a huge blow to the club and the competition in general
Smith is known for being super fit and finished first in the club's 2km time trial in November as he prepares for a pivotal year in terms of his career
“The entire club will rally around him at this difficult time as he begins his rehabilitation journey.”
Smith is out of contract at the end of 2024 and there is speculation about a move away from the Bulldogs.
Hawthorn and Geelong are most strongly linked to the midfielder, who suffered a tough run of form in mid-2023.
It led to fierce external criticism and a strong defense from Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge.
Smith struggled to break through in a star-studded midfield with prolific ball winners Marcus Bontempelli, Tom Liberatore, Adam Treloar and Jack Macrae.
Smith (pictured at this year's Melbourne Cup) will be out of contract at the end of next season and has been linked with a move away from the Dogs
He looked set for a big season after finishing first in the club's 2km time trial last month.
Smith has recently linked up with Collingwood star Nick Daicos in the United States and is one of the most marketable figures in the AFL, with an Instagram following of more than 340,000.
He has a strong bond with younger fans, having previously spoken about his mental health struggles in the spotlight.
