Hamilton, New Zealand crash: Wild moment learner driver flies through the air and smashes car into a roundabout injuring a child in the backseat

Terrifying footage captured the moment a teenage driver with a learner’s license turned his car around before crashing into a roundabout and injuring a young passenger.

The heartbreaking crash happened at 1.24am on March 8 on Cobham Street in Hamilton, New Zealand’s North Island.

Dashcam footage from a nearby car captured the carnage, showing the white sedan gaining speed as it approached the vehicle from behind.

The vehicle then flew into the air and was launched over the roundabout before spectacularly crashing into a street sign.

The car rolled at least nine times before coming to a stop on its roof.

One of the occupants in the car was heard saying ‘holy f**k’ on the dashcam.

She was heard ordering her companion to call New Zealand’s emergency number 111.

A New Zealand Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia there were four people in the vehicle, one of whom was seriously injured.

The three others, including the driver, were slightly injured.

The shocking footage was shared on Facebook on Saturday, leaving Aussies stunned.

“I think they can safely say speed was a factor,” one person wrote.

“This is a clear example of how excessive speed can kill,” said another.

“Will they ever learn?” another wrote.

Many were also concerned that the seriously injured person was a child.

“Damn, I hope this was at least a medical episode. To drive so recklessly with a child in the car…’ said one.

“What idiots, especially with a child in the car,” said another.

A New Zealand Police spokesperson said they could not confirm the age of the injured child and were still investigating.

“Any further police action is still being considered,” he said.
